Courses Developed

Applied Geophysics provides Seniors and first-year graduate students in Geophysics, Geological Engineering, and Hydrogeology with a Capstone experience of both theoretical background and hands-on practice in the use of geophysical surveys to solve tectonic, stratigraphic, resources exploration and development, and environmental problems. Includes six on-line lab exercises; providing the students with Optim SDS's commercial SeisOpt® ReMiTM package; my JRG software, enabling students to perform complete seismic processing exercises on their own computers; and a portable gravity inversion. I have recorded all lectures for this class and now deliver it ``flipped,'' using principles of Team-Based Learning, and give few in-class lectures (30 lectures and tutorials, 5.8 Gb). A key component of the course is a one-week geophysical field camp, usually over spring break. Students have written eleven journal papers and thirty-nine presentations for national professional meetings on their work for this course.
Geophysical Series, Filtering, and Introduction to Imaging gives the fundamentals of time-series analysis for physical scientists, and then goes on with acoustic imaging examples to give the student practical experience in implementing these fundamentals. Includes interactive laboratory exercises in wavefield propagation, and led to the development of Louie's JRG software for open-source seismic modeling and processing. These exercises allow Geophysics graduate students to develop practical analysis methods for large-scale data sets from theoretical principles derived in the lectures. I have recorded 45 lectures for this class (7.2 Gb) and it is ready for on-line delivery.
Advanced Seismic Imaging and Tomography completes for Geophysics graduate students ``a coherent overview of the whole field of data processing as it is used in petroleum exploration,'' (Claerbout, 1985) and is the most advanced course in seismic exploration at the University of Nevada. The course goes beyond texts by including introductions to tomography and finite-difference modeling developed by Profs. Robert W. Clayton and John E. Vidale, and my material on Kirchhoff migration. I have recorded 47 lectures for this class (21 Gb) and it is ready for on-line delivery.
Basin Analysis with 3-D Seismic Stratigraphy and Interpretation. Teamed with J. Trexler of UNR to develop his graduate-level Basin Analysis course into an interdisciplinary course combining fluvial sedimentology with 3-D seismic sequence stratigraphy, in response to student and employer demand. This course was offered in the Springs of 2009 and 2011, and Fall 2016, to a mixed audience of a dozen Geology and Geophysics graduate students.
Scientific Visualization Workshop, in cooperation with the UNR Computer Science Department and UCCSN Computing Services staff. Taught the Spring semesters of 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, and 1997. Included research projects performed by students.
Environmental Exploration Geophysics, developed with R. Karlin of UNR and K. Taylor of DRI, provided Seniors and first-year Graduates in the Hydrology and Hydrogeology programs with both theoretical background and hands-on experience in the use of geophysical surveys to solve water resource and environmental problems. Taught the Fall semesters of 1993, 1995, and 1997.
Structure, Tectonics and Earth Physics II, developed with R. Karlin, introduces geological sciences majors to quantitative plate tectonics and geophysics. Created 12 entirely new lectures and 8 new hands-on laboratory exercises. Taught in Spring 2001 and 2002.
